I first heard the trumpet sound when I was 5 years old and from that moment I just knew
that that is what I really want.
I must mension one of my exiting days in my life at the age 10
when my father baught me my first golden "Selmer" trumpet.
Unfortunately
for me, as a child and a teenager I had unprofessional teachers and I was one of those highly frustrated young
players with a great sound and musical talent but with several inbound playing
limitations : Low endurance, high note playing limitations, tone production problems and others.
What I did that no teacher ever told me to do, was constantly listen to Trumpet records, buying every record (the old discs)
I could find, and playing together with them when I was alone at home. I managed to accumelate what I considered to be The best selection of
trumpet players :
Al Hirt, Harry James, Himy Bellson, Mauric Andre, Louis Armstrong ,
Maynard Furgesson and others.
At the age of 22 after several years of not playing, I took on a
philharmonic trumpet player professional teacher who got me to start form the beginning.
Just like in anything in life, getting rid of bad
habits is mostly more difficult than starting on something new. I worked hard for
2 years ! on almost a daily basis with taking lessons every 2-3 weeks
(you can imagine how expensive they were) .
After recovering and reaching a high playing level I devoted several years teaching
and now, 43 years after my first tone production I finally decided to get
going and help anyone - from adults to children, from "almost players"
to advanced players, by writing this book so anyone
can just do it right.
What I did not tell you yet is that Trumpet playing has been my
hobby now for many years - not as my profession.
This gives
me a much better understanding of anyone who wants to play or to
improve playing.
This is what gives it the special flavour !
And believe me, in playing a Brass instument, and mainly the
Trumpet there ia such a wide veriety of tone, technique and sound that if you
really want to enjoy your playing, you must get it right fromm the
beginning.
